My Favorite Nail Salons

So we all like to indulge every once in a while and get a salon treatment.
I wanted to share my list of favorite nail salons in the MontCo Area, check them out...

Fiji Nails, Ardmore, PA (610) 658-5980
A classmate of mine recommended Fiji for an eyebrow wax during college. I did end up getting my brows done at Fiji (waxed and dyed) every 2-3 weeks for 2 years! Now that I'm not on the main line I miss it so much! But Fiji is good for so much more. They do quick manicures (they may not be the most efficient but if you're in a rush and don't care for the spa-effect...)

Currently, the cost of a manicure at Fiji is $10..the going rate everywhere else is $12-$14 so Fiji is a real bargain! They have a multitude of colors and usually send out coupons every month with discounts!
Eyebrow wax: $6
Eyebrow dye: $6
Pedicure: $20

Enough Said.

Noble Nails, Jenkintown, PA (215) 887-3470
This nail salon has less colors, is a little more expensive, but you're paying for the relaxing atmosphere, free massage when you sit at the nail dryer, and the owner, Esther's friendly attitude and nice demeanor.

A manicure is $14, but they do a nice job and you come out feeling relaxed, not rushed.
I had a bad experience here a few years back with an eyebrow wax, so I wouldn't recommend it if you can hold off and go somewhere you trust.

Downtown Nails, State College, PA (814) 237-2454
On the off chance you're up at State College, PA, Downtown Nails is great! They gave me a $5 polish change every other week and even though the salon is small, the two people who work there are very cool and if you're a frequent customer, as I was, they'll start to recognize your name on the Caller ID and fit you in for a manicure!

Bryn Mawr Nails, Bryn Mawr, PA (610) 520-1812
This small salon off Lancaster Avenue was popular amongst my classmates during college. I have only been once but I know that they offer student discounts on mani-pedi combos and its clean and cute.

The color selection is not fabulous but you can always bring your own and enjoy the tidy, little shop's atmosphere!

Olive Nails, Ardmore, PA (610) 649-4766
This salon gave me a great manicure, even though I did have to wait for a while. It's an unassuming shop on Rittenhouse Place in Ardmore, it's clean, the technicians are friendly AND they have a membership club where your points stack up toward free and discounted services!

New Essie Collection: Brazilliant (and a quick note about French Affair)

http://www.essie.com/latest-collection/

Above is the link to Essie's latest collection for Summer 2011.
I think the only colors I'll be trying are Absolutely Shore and Super Bossa Nova

The other colors are as follows:

  • Absolutely Shore (a soft sea foam green)

  • Meet Me at Sunset (a vibrant deep orange)

  • Smooth Sailing (a breezy lavender blue with a reflection of pearl)

  • Super Bossa Nova (an upbeat bright fuchsia)

  • Too Too Hot (a sizzling rich red coral)

  • Braziliant (a hot orange with a touch of shimmer)

  • A quick note on Essie French Affair:

This was the Spring 2011 Collection and I happened to buy two of the colors: Sand Tropez (creamy tan/neutral, third from the right) and Kisses and Bises (sheer opal-pink, far right)

My mom got a manicure with Topless and Barefoot and it's such a great color but my local store didn't have it! (A great pinky-nude, second from the right)

I had Sand Tropez on my nails and put a coat of Kisses and Bises over it; although you can't really tell the difference in this lighting, but trust me!

UPDATED-Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips

NOW: Buy 2 Get 1 Free at ULTA (check out the other great nail polish deals too!)

A friend told me about this new product (after both she and I had bad experiences with OPI Axxium Gel.) This press-on polish promises to stay on for 10 days with barely any chipping. The first time I used this product I bought a shimmery-gold color called "Raise a Glass." It did stay on for a full week, but then it began to crack and chip. I next bought "Red-y For Trouble." This time it failed miserably. The red had a bright pink hue once it was on my nails and it was much harder to apply than the gold. I ended up throwing in the towel mid-manicure, removing the polish and throwing out the remaining strips. I did, however, mail a box of Salon Effects to my best friend who is living in Thailand, (She loves nail polish too and I feel as though she should have a chance to try out all of the new nail fads while abroad.)

My local pharmacies (all 3 of them) did not have the selection of Salon Effects that I see online. I would be interested in trying "Violet Night" if I can get my hands on it. I am NOT a huge fan of nail art or glitter so most of the other colors will not be coming home with me. Although I must admit that "Misbehaved" looks cute on other nail bloggers I have seen, so I may try it out. I know that some of you have tried various Salon Effects colors. I'd be interested in seeing what your experiences were. If you'd like, please leave a comment letting me know your thoughts :)

    Recent Obsessions

I have definitely neglected this blog for some time, but I’m back and ready to write. I want to make clear that although this blog will include pictures, it will NOT be a forum for me to purchase every nail polish known to man and post swatches. To me, if you love nail polish you must always have a manicure (whether it was done at home or in the salon) and showcase the colors that you love. There are many nail polish blogs that exclusively show images of the newest nail lacquers, but these blogs do not convey the love of a good manicure or the way that polish brings an outfit together and adds the perfect finishing touch. Anyone can purchase the newest nail polish, apply it to her nails, take a photo, and share it on cyberspace, that’s easy. It takes time and effort to convey an adoration of nail polish to an audience and spark that very passion in others. As trivial as a bottle of polish may be in the grand scheme of life, painting my nails is my artistic outlet. Like I’ve said before, nail polish is the most important accessory to any outfit.

This entry is devoted to my nail polish collection: an ever-growing assortment of every color that I have found remotely enticing over the last few years. If I were to tell you every color that I own, you may stop reading because I have about 70 polishes. I have purples, blues, numerous shades of pinks, corals and sheer polishes; the list goes on. Even though this entry is lengthy, hold tight. I’m going to do a spotlight on the most recent polishes I’ve consistently used:

    Summer 2010-

I am a big fan of dark, vampy colors but when the weather is warm I can’t help but to lighten up my nail color. From the spring through the summer, I was using Done Out in Deco, by OPI. I saw this color on one of my sister’s friend’s and loved it. It’s an opaque lilac, and not nearly as gray as Parlez-Vous OPI? so I don’t understand when people make the comparison. Done out in Deco is also more opaque and slightly less purple than Do You Lilac It? by OPI. It’s from the South Beach Collection from Summer 2009…an oldie but a goodie. I think it’s very mod and I would go as far to say that it is the purple version of Fiji, by Esssie. (I’ll do a blog entry on what I consider a “version” a little bit later on.)

For my toes I frequently use another 2009 trend: neons. When you have a great tan, neon colors amplify your bronze skin. Even though neon colors weren’t as big in 2010, I think this trend should last! Of course I own one of Essie’s most popular Spring 2009 color, Punchy Pink, but I decided to go with Flip Flop Fantasy, by China Glaze. It has more of an orange hue than Punchy Pink. Neon colors do tend to chip more easily than others and can be somewhat streaky when applying them so make sure that each coat is dry before applying the next coat. This takes extra care and finesse to complete successfully. DISCLAIMER: this trend is not for the fair-skinned. If you do not have a tan, do not try to wear neon nail polish! You will end up looking washed out; end of story.

Essie did a great job in Summer 2010 and brought us the perfect opaque coral, Haute as Hello. Its creamy, peachy, and looks great on nails or toes. This polish does, however, change color after being in the bottle for a month or so, which was disappointing. I’ve been shopping and seen bottles of this color that were significantly different from my own.

    Fall 2010:

GRAYS...Chinchilly. I know it’s an older polish, but it took me a while to learn to love this color. It’s not as dark as You Don’t Know Jacques, by OPI, but that is not a bad thing. I love the cool stone-gray color. Similar to this color was a new Fall 2010 Essie polish called Merino Cool. Is it purple? Is it gray? Is it taupe? I can’t tell, and that’s what I like about this color. I have gotten so many compliments when wearing Merino Cool, although I had often wished that it were more opaque and slightly darker. Essie answered my prayers with Smokin’ Hot. I was so excited to have found this, although I have only worn it a few times. I recently found out what a rarity it is to actually own a bottle. I was talking to someone last week and brought up Smokin’ Hot. She reported that this shade is sold out everywhere. I hope Essie reissues this color because it has the potential to become a classic like Wicked, Fiji , etc.

A khaki-brown with a gold shimmer is the perfect color for fall. Ingrid, by China Glaze embodies all of the aforementioned characteristics. It looks great on toes as well as nails, and is a great transitional color in between seasons because it’s not too dark, and not too light. I could not pass up this color even though China Glaze is not the best quality polish.

    Winter 2011:

Although I started wearing this color in the late summer on my toes, I wore OPI’s, Ski Teal We Drop quite frequently during the winter. In August it looked vibrant with a tan, and in the winter it brought some great color into my dark wardrobe. Sometimes we want dark nails without giving the illusion that we are wearing black nail polish (the effect we get when wearing vampy shades like Wicked or Lincoln Park After Dark;) Ski Teal We Drop does just that.

Light My Sapphire by OPI is a color that I was trying to find for a while and one day I stumbled upon this shade in my local beauty store. This color has the slightest hint of navy blue, but is really a rich charcoal shimmer. Light My Sapphire goes on so evenly and smoothly that it takes the stress out of doing your nails.

    About Me

    Hi everyone,

I am a recent college graduate (May 2010) who has a long standing love affair with nail polish. I can remember my first professional manicure for my uncles wedding where I chose a lilac color to compliment my short, clean nails. This may be where my love for nail polish began, but I can't say for sure. I started collecting nail polishes in high school, and really expanded my collection in college.

Currently I own 65+ polishes and I even have my own my plastic shelving (like you would see at the nail salon.) My colors are primarily Essie and OPI but I have a few other brands mixed in as well. My favorite color is purple so I pretty much own every shade of purple that you can imagine, ranging from Sexy
Divide to Funky Dunky. Every new collection that comes out usually has at least one or two shades that I fall in love with.  I'll often go after discontinued polishes to add to my collection, like my all-time favorite: Black Tie Optional by OPI (which, I recently got my paws on!)

Some people collect shoes, some collect purses, and while I have plenty of shoes and purses, nail polishes are, to me, the perfect little pick-me-up and my favorite item to collect. Manicured nails and toes are the most important accessory to any outfit. In my eyes, if my nails aren't polished to perfection, then my outfit could never possibly be complete.

I painted nails in college for a small fee, although I am not a licensed nail technician; I was the owner of Nails by Liz, based out of my apartment in Suburban Philadelphia. As a graduate of Bryn Mawr College, a Seven Sisters school where fashionable and polished looks were a rarity amongst the student body, I was somewhat of an anomaly on campus. However, this only fueled my desire to spread the joy that nail polish brings throughout the college.

I am well aware of other successful nail polish blogs on the Internet today, but I feel that my blog, which will be fleshed out with other posts about fashion, and goings-on in Philadelphia's fashion and beauty world, etc., will stand-out. I hope this first entry piques your interest and that you will be back for more.

    Enjoy!
    Liz
